Reporting a Rape / Sexual Assault

If you are raped, you must remember at all times that you are not to blame. The rapist is the person who commits the crime – NOT YOU !

Anybody can be raped at any time and anywhere. Women who are raped often know the person who raped them.

It can be their husband, partner, boyfriend or neighbour.

In the case of a rape or sexual assault that has just happened, there are important DO’S and DONTs  that people need to be aware of should they decide to report it to the Gardai.

DO NOT wash until after a medical examination because important forensic evidence may be washed away.

DO NOT wash or discard underwear or outer wear, as these will be needed for forensic examination.

DO contact your local Rape Crisis Centre as soon as possible.

DO remember that you are entitled to speak to a female Garda, if this is what you want.

DO remember, also, that a female doctor or your own G.P. may examine you if this is your choice. The doctor who examines you may be required to appear in court to present the medical evidence.

DO remember that you are entitled to confidentiality from doctors or Gardai.

DO ask for the names of any Gardai or Detectives that you have significant contact with, from the time you first report it.

DO request that a copy of your statement [if you make one] be sent to you, or collected by you at a later date.

DO request that your Rape Crisis Counsellor or Solicitor help you get compensation for “out of pocket” expenses from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal. [Compensation will not be paid for trauma suffered].

DO remember you have the right to have a support person [your RCC Counsellor] or friend with you at any time.
